A week's deployment to Australia's Black Summer for Channel 4 News

In January, Channel 4 News sent me to Australia to produce our coverage of the bushfires raging in the South East of the country.

With Kylie Morris and camerawoman Philippa Collins, I produced six stories during our deployment, including this 7 minute news feature which was picked up by PBS Newshour, where we tailed a fire crew up into the Snowy Mountains where they were trying to defend a remote settlement. The captain of the local brigade told us he’d never seen fires like this. We were also grateful to be welcomed by the residents of Cobargo, a town still reeling from the passage of the fire front on new year’s eve, where we met Denise and Tom who brought us with them as they returned to their flattened house for the first time.

We also reported stories on the volunteers searching for surviving wildlife, calls for a return to Indigenous land management techniques and daily updates on the spread and devastation caused by the fires.
